Swedish City with an Abundance of Family Fun

Sweden’s capital city offers an incredibly picturesque setting with historic buildings but it’s also one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. Stockholm is home to a variety of attractions that will appeal to kids and adults alike no matter what time of year you choose to visit.
An old town atmosphere, an island-based theme park and some amazing scenic spots are just some of the highlights of this Baltic Sea city.

An oasis in the city
The lush little island of Djurgarden is a favorite destination for city residents and tourists. You can get to the island either by foot or by ferry boat or tram and once there you’ll be able to enjoy rollercoasters at the theme park as well as the 22 museums. It’s also a great place to spend a day exploring and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and lakeside picnic areas in which to take a break.
Children’s favorite
Stockholm is a city of museums but one of the most popular is the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Cosmonova. This museum is dedicated to nature and mankind’s development, where children (and adults) can learn about the universe via nine permanent exhibitions as well as films projected in 3D onto the 8,000 square feet Cosmonova dome. If you fancy exploring the wreck of the Vasa, a sunken warship that was salvaged in 1961, then head to the fascinating Vasa Museum in central Stockholm.

The great outdoors
If you’re taking short breaks to Stockholm and want a peek at the scenery just outside of the city limits, Hellasgarden is the place to go. This beautiful nature reserve offers activities such as boating, cycling, swimming and ice skating. Stockholmers and visitors arrive here all year round to picnic, dine in the open air restaurant seating areas, play games and to just generally socialize in a natural setting.

The Old Town
The historic Old Town quarter dates back to the 13th century but most of the buildings you’ll see as you wander the cobbled streets are from the 1700s onwards. This is a charming area of winding alleyways, city squares and colorful little houses. It is here that you’ll find the Royal Palace where you can view the Changing of the Guards or visit the many art galleries, pavement cafes and authentic Swedish restaurants. Christmas travelers will be in for a treat and can enjoy the traditional markets, carol singers and festive illuminations within a snow-covered Old Town setting.

Stockholm is definitely one of those cities where exploring on foot is a pleasure. You’ll find something new to do here every day and this European destination is geared towards families with plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained.
