MAGELLAN eXplorist GC geocaching GPS Review

Are you an explorer, or do you have a child that loves to explore? Are you a fan of geocaching perhaps? Well I have a great device to introduce you all to, a MAGELLAN eXploristGC geocaching GPS. Here is a little more information about this great Magellan device from the website:

To support all your geocaching adventures, the eXplorist GC comes packed with tons of helpful hardware features. Most striking, the vibrant color screen is transflective, which allows for the best readability in direct sunlight. To zero in on the exact location of a hidden cache, the SiRFstarIII GPS chipset provides accuracy of 10-feet (3-meters). To keep your fun going all day long, the device is powered by two AA batteries for 18 hours of constant usage. Finally, to keep your new favorite toy safe as you explore the outdoors, eXplorist GC is rugged, waterproof, and submersible (IPX-7). All of this is packed into a small and attractive handheld form factor that can be hung around your neck or attached to your pack with the built-in carabineer hook.

With the summer here in full force, I am always looking for fun things for my daughter to do while she is home from school. There was no camp this year, so we have to find things to occupy her time the whole summer. Sure she loves to play video games, and play on the computer, but I don't want her to spend her summer just sitting there, I want her to go outside and appreciate the summer.

I was very fortunate to be able to check out a MAGELLAN eXplorist GC geocaching GPS

The eXplorist series of rugged, waterproof, handheld GPS receivers are perfect for any outdoor adventure. Whether you’re hiking, backpacking, geocaching, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, or riding ATVs, eXplorist provides innovative features, easy-to-use menus, sunlight readable screens, and long lasting battery life.

So when I had the chance to review a MAGELLAN eXplorist GC geocaching GPS, I was so excited to show my daughter the world of geocaching. So what exactly is geocaching? Well the dictionary defines it as:

ge·o·cach·ing

 [jee-oh-kash-ing]
noun
the outdoor sport or game of searching for hidden objects by using GlobalPositioning System (GPS) coordinates posted on the Internet.

Simply it is a treasure hunt that is fun for the whole family. Instead of using a treasure map for your hints at where to find the treasure you use the GPS. The GPS works to help you find out where the goods are hiding. Mind you you are not going to find gold like a real pirate may find. But you will have a blast trying to find the small treasurers.

eXplorist GC provides unmatched assistance with navigation, such as the combination of the world’s two most useful navigational tools – a compass and a map! Overlay a series of different transparent compass styles on top of a pre-loaded worldwide map that show roads, water features, parks, and city centers. Access the dashboard screen that shows a mini-compass for quick reference and customizable navigation data fields, such as latitude, longitude, heading, bearing, distance to end, trip odometer, and many more. Go back to the map screen and view your active track, which is a series of digital breadcrumbs to record all yours movements. Mark your starting point (car, trailhead, parking lot…) with a waypoint and easily navigate back to that location once you’ve unearthed your fill of caches. eXplorist GC will not only find hidden treasure, but it will also help you find your way back.

My daughter and I had a great time searching for some fun treats. The devise was easy to set up, and easy to use. My daughter had it figured out before I did (kids!)  she is such a smart one. We checked out our park area, and we did not have any luck in our walk able neighborhood, so we sent exploring in other areas and we had more luck, we found some change, toys and more.

I love that my daughter is learning more about directions and having fun. She also loves leaving geocaches so she can track how far hers go. My daughter is now infatuated with geocaching, and looks forward to each day that she gets to go out and explore. I am so happy that she actually wants to go outside and I do not have to coerce her to get away from the tv and video games. Now that is what I call a fun and active summer.

So if you are looking for a handy item that will help with your exploring fun, I would highly recommend a MAGELLAN eXplorist GC geocaching GPS, this retails for just under $150, the price may be on the higher side but the product is well made and it quality. I am sure this will hold up well for years to come.
