The Spice Lab Salt Collection

When you cook, do you love to spice things up and make sure your food is flavorful? Salt is so very important in making that dish of yours great. And I have a wonderful place to introduce you to, The Spice Lab. Here is a little more information about The Spice Lab from the website:

For Christmas 2009, technology entrepreneur Brett Cramer wanted to share his new-found fascination with gourmet sea salts with his family and friends. Enjoying woodworking as well as being an avid gourmet cook, he handcrafted a wooden base out of scrap lumber to hold test tubes filled with exotic sea salts from around the world.  The gifts were so popular that he was encouraged to begin offering his sea salt collections for sale and that was the start of The Spice Lab.

The Spice Lab website quickly expanded as Brett continued to discover new sources and sea salt varieties from throughout the United States and far off locales.  From Hawaiian Black Lava Salt to Pink Himalayan Crystals valued for their therapeutic properties, each new offering had a unique taste and tale.

The Spice Lab now boasts over 140 different salts from 40 countries. The product line includes 120 jarred sea salts and 33 different Salt Collections “ in 5, 6 or 11 test tube sets, each with an American-made, handcrafted wooden base constructed from recycled shipping pallets and other discarded wood. The offerings extend to include salt plates, stones and lamps, salt cellars, spoons, jars and even bath salts.

With the message to “Taste the World of Salt”, The Spice Lab brings exotic flavors and intoxicating fragrances to everyone who likes to experiment with foods and discover new taste combinations.  Professional chefs and home cooks alike now are using gourmet sea salts to enhance their culinary creations.

The Spice Lab, Inc. is a family-owned business based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  The company’s extensive line of sea salts are sold in a growing number of gourmet and specialty gift shops, museums and other retail locations.

I was very fortunate to be able to review a 5 tube salt set.

My Review:

I love to cook. With my busy life I don’t get to cook as much as I would like. But when I do I really go all out. I love to try new thing and new recipes.  When I had the chance to do a review for The Spice Lab, I was so excited! I could not wait to start cooking something new.

But first, I know what you are thinking… Ugh salt… the worst think for you. Well I am here to tell you that it has its health benefits as well.  And it really can make food quite delicious.

There are so very many great sounding salt flavors!

  • Bali Coconut and Lime Smoked Sea Salt
  • Fleur De Sel France First Harvest Sea Salt
  • Island of Cyprus White Flake Sea Salt
  • Hawaiian Red Clay Alaea Sea Salt
  • El Salvador Qab-nab Taab First Harvest Sea Salt
  • Bolivian Sunset Pink Warm Spring Mineral Salt

Bali Coconut and Lime Smoked Sea Salt? Wow that sounds so great! That would be great on my lime chicken…  I will have to pick up a set that includes that salt for sure.

The set I was sent had the following flavors:

Chardonnay Oak Smoked Fleur De Sel Sea Salt
Hawaiian Black Lava Sea Salt
Himalayan Crystal Pink Salt
Island of Cyprus Black Flake Sea Salt
Persian Blue Diamond - Rock Salt (Fine)

Each had a different taste and smell. This is not your usual table salt you buy in the supermarket. This is a unique experience, that I think is much better than plain old salt.  My favorite flavor was the Chardonnay Oak Smoked Fleur De Sel Sea Salt it had a distinctive smoky taste, and it was a great addition to a stew I made the other night. The smoky flavor really came through in the meal.
I love the way the collection looks in my kitchen. The five tubes are in an attractive base that is American made from recycled wood. That is great, I love that this is made in America.

The salt set also comes with a reference card that offers suggestion of which salts go with which dishes a great wooden spoon.  I am looking forward to trying the pairings.

I would recommend a salt set from The Spice Lab, it is just wonderful. You will just love it. If you love to cook, and love flavorful food this would be great for you. The collections range from $24.95 to $59.95. This would also make a great gift for a friend, a mother pretty much anyone!

The generous folks at The Spice Lab are giving one of Susan’s Disney Family readers a chance to win a 5 tube salt set.  Wouldn’t you love to win this?
